- Lagos state government has asked the Nigeria police for a duplicate of the case file of Mercy Aigbe and husband's domestic violence saga - In Lagos state, domestic violence as a crime against the state and not only against the abused - On April 28, the news of Mercy been battered by her husband hit the street The last has not been heard about Mercy Aigbe’s domestic violence saga even after her husband Lanre Gentry has spent seven days in prison for laying his hands on the actress. The Lagos state government is said to have written a letter through the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) dated May 22 demanding that the Nigerian Police should forward the duplicate of the case file on the alleged domestic assault meted out to the actress by her husband of seven years Gentry. The letter indicated the interest of the state government in prosecuting the assault case in the earliest possible time so that both victim and offender can have their case resolved promptly
The resolve to write the police was as a result of the result of the recent medical check-up conducted on Mercy that indicated alleged assault by her husband. Asides writing to the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the state criminal investigative department (SCID) Panti, Yaba, Lagos. The DPP also copied other relevant agencies to alert them of its plan. The coordinator of the State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVR) Titilola Vivour- Adeniyi had said during a sensitization programme that domestic violence is a crime committed against the state. She said that if anyone is abused, the state is also being abused, hence our mindsets have to change and domestic violence has to be treated as a crime against the state.
The state government argued that the assault contravene sections 171, 243 and 244 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
